Michael Pawlyn: Using nature's genius in architecture

How can architects build a new world of sustainable beauty? By learning from nature. At TEDSalon in London, Michael Pawlyn describes three habits of nature that could transform architecture and society: radical resource efficiency, closed loops, and drawing energy from the sun.

Jason Fried: Why work doesn't happen at work
Jason Fried has a radical theory of working: that the office isn't a good place to do it. At TEDxMidwest, he lays out the main problems (call them the M&Ms) and offers three suggestions to make work work.

Finally! A scientific explanation as to why I never get anything done at work!

Brenda's French Soul Food
625 Polk Street
San Francisco

What do you think when you hear the phrase "French soul food?" If you thought beignets filled with crawfish, you're crazy. They'd never do a thing like that.

Or did they?
We ordered the variety beignet plate, which entailed the following (from the right): plain, granny smith, chocolate, and finally, with the cajun seasoning on top, crawfish. Strange as a savory filling in what is normally considered a "French donut," sounds, it ended up being really tasty.

This being a brunch place, our dishes were egg and grits heavy. Here is what's called the Hangtown Fry: Crispy oyster, bacon and scallion scramble

Granola pancakes with fruit:

Croque Monsieur - baked ham & gruyère with béchamel sauce on sliced sourdough:

Shrimp & Grits - Sautéed shrimp, cheddar grits, spicy tomato-bacon gravy:

#68 Watch all the best picture Oscar nominees before the Academy Awards every year (2011)

Watch all the best picture Oscar nominees before the Academy Awards every year
2011
2012
2013

This task has been made infinitely harder since the Academy decided to nominate 10 films for best picture. Sure, this guarantees that no films get snubbed for the nomination for Best Picture, but it sure causes a strain for those who have this particular task on their 101 things in 1,001 days to do list!

The Best Picture nominees are:

Black Swan

The Fighter

Inception

The Kids Are All Right

The King's Speech

127 Hours

The Social Network

Toy Story 3

True Grit

Winter's Bone

The King of Limbs
Radiohead
Release Date: February 18, 2011

It's not hard to see Radiohead's transition from groundbreaking 90s alt rock 5 piece from Liverpool to groundbreaking late 2000's electropop/rock/whatever the hell it is 5 piece from Liverpool. The King of Limbs is Radiohead's first album release since 2008's In Rainbows which was unique at the time since the band released it without the backing of a major record label. As a result, they were able to employ an unorthodox method of distributing the album: by allowing people to pay what they wished to download the mp3s. Being a cheapskate myself, I got the album for a $1 and I'd have to say it's been one of my better music purchases in the past decade.

While The King of Limbs isn't a far cry from the sort of trippy sound the band has been cultivating since Kid A in 2000 (which would mean that they've been a tripped out electronic-ish band longer than they've been an alt-rock band now), Radiohead's followers for the most part are willing to buy into the fact that the band can do no wrong no matter what the hell they release.

I am proud to say that I fall into that category.

RELATED:
The first supposed single and associated music video has been released from their album. The video itself has garnered mixed reviews as to how you're supposed to interpret Thom Yorke's seemingly epileptic dance moves:

...but the internet at once saw an opportunity to make this their own, and the meme came rolling in:

Naan n' Chutney
525 Haight Street

Standard Indian fare, and since I'm a creature of habit, I ordered the chicken tikka masala. One thing that did stand out was the potato naan, which surprisingly was much much more interesting than the garlic naan I normally order at Indian restaurants.

Bellanico
4238 Park Blvd
Oakland, CA

I don't normally find myself at fancy prix fixe gourmet French restaurants, yet here I am, less than a month later from tasting the best food in the world at Bellanico in Oakland. $26 per person seemed like such a steal compared to the horror I experienced not too long ago, but it didn't mean the food was of any less quality. Plus, the head chef of the place happens to be the cousin of the other half, so it's gotta be good.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to keep a copy of the menu, so I have no idea what it was I was eating, nor will I be able to tell you. So just enjoy the pictures.

yawn

I feel like I've been in some kind of stupor lately. I'm not entirely sure what's induced it, or how to remedy it. I can ask for more time to myself, yet I find that even those hours are squandered clicking aimlessly through the various tabs of links I had been meaning to peruse through, skimming a few lines here and there, getting bored, and ultimately falling back to refreshing my twitter page every 5 or so minutes. Before I know it, it's past midnight and like anyone approaching the twilight of their lives, I find myself thinking back to the 'good ol' days' when it was still 7pm. The night was so young back then. It had so many ambitions.

Maybe I just need to unplug for awhile. Maybe I need to be poked on facebook or see my screenname with an '@' in front of it on twitter, just to make sure I'm still alive.

For the record, I'm not exactly feeling down or sorry for myself. Just a little brain dead.

To accentuate what I'm feeling at the moment (or perhaps to highlight ways to mitigate the situation), here's a fairly interesting RSA animate piece on what exactly motivates us:

And if a 10 minute video is too long for you to comprehend/follow/pay attention to, here's a video of Shaq conducting the Boston Pops:
