Day 72

Visited the International Center of Photography after work today. Photos capturing the aftermath of 9/11 was the featured exhibit tonight.

And that's all I really have to say about that.

9/29/11

Day 71

There was a free Roots concert tonight, but I opted to go to K-Mart instead out of sheer laziness, the fact that I have already seen them live (yes they are awesome live), and because I didn't want to miss Community at 8.

As a result, my picture of the day is not as exciting as it could've been. This guy was selling knives.

The Traveling Bear

Oh hey, almost forgot to mention that I concluded my stint with the Traveling Bear Project over the weekend. I felt I had taken this bear around enough of your typical run of the mill touristy picture-worthy New York spots, so I felt it was time for it to experience another city. Of course, I couldn't take the bear everywhere I went...after all, you don't see too many people my age carrying around a stuffed bear everywhere he goes.

Soo, I sent Mocha back home to San Diego, where you can see the rest of its journeys well documented here.

9/28/11

Day 70

Stayed late at work tonight. Saw this.

Cool.

9/27/11

Day 69

Seems I find myself here at Barnes and Noble a lot for these random celebrity lectures/Q&A's about the books they've written. I've managed to see Moby and Henry Winkler, and even had the chance to see Jane Lynch too but instead chose to drink with my coworker instead (just you try and choose between the two).

Anyways, if it isn't obvious enough, tonight's special guest was John Lithgow of Harry and the Hendersons and 3rd Rock From The Sun fame, and more recently being Barney's dad on How I Met Your Mother fame.

9/26/11

Day 68

My coworker and I shoot rubberbands at each other all day. Didn't think we'd ever see this in our lifetime (or something).

"Thank you, The Pharcyde"

9/25/11

Day 93

When my family visited here last week, I introduced them to the staple of any New York City food truck. $5 will get you this plate of lamb and chicken over rice, onions, tomatoes, and lettuce doused in malaise sauce.

Mmm. Mm.

9/24/11

Day 92

Zombies!

Today I enjoyed New York's version of the zombie 5k marathon. The premise is this:

-Run like hell from the zombies
You can defend yourself with Nerf guns, baseball bats, boards with nails in them, light sabers or what have you. But all in all, you'd only be delaying the inevitable swarm of the undead picking at your brain (much like what would happen during the real zombie apocalypse).
The makeup and costumes were fairly elaborate, and us "survivors" were seemingly well-armed to survive this 2.8 mile run, as evidenced by these pictures.
Unfortunately, of the 40 or so survivors, only 3 made it through the whole course. None of these runners had a survival weapon.
If it's one thing I learned today, it's that during the real zombie apocalypse, I'd probably be one of the first to go. If real-life zombies are anything like they are on Dawn of the Dead and not like the ones in Night of the Living Dead, I'm pretty much screwed.

9/23/11

Day 91

Saw this at Happy Hour tonight...and I'm not sure what else there is to say.

9/22/11

Day 90

More scenes from my office. In case you're wondering what this poster is referring to, Google's latest update to their search engine algorithm has been named "Panda," and it has apparently been wreaking havoc on many businesses' search rankings. Clearly, we in SEO have been able to capitalize on the whole adorable endangered animal bit to advertise our services.

9/21/11

Day 89

Not the first time I've seen Times Square at night, but it gets me every time at how incredibly similar this is to the Vegas strip.

9/20/11

Day 88

My family had visited the Hershey Factory in Pennsylvania this past weekend, and as such got me a huge bucket of chocolate. Unfortunately, I'm not a huge fan of kisses, so I decided to put them to better use here in the office.

9/19/11

Day 87

Looks like my banana bread/cake was popular at work.

David Bowie - The Man Who Sold The World

Repeat assault.

9/18/11

Day 86

For some reason, I decided I was in a baking mood today. For your benefit, here is Mark's Semi-Famous Banana Bread:
3/4 c. of brown sugar
3/4 c. of white sugar
4 bananas
2 eggs
1 stick of butter
2 1/2 cups of flour
1 tbsp of baking powder
1 tbsp of vanilla extract
3/4 c. of milk
1 c. of walnuts (optional)

Mix both sugars with butter. Add eggs and bananas and mix well.

Add flour, baking powder, and vanilla extract. Mix well and alternate with milk.

Mix all together and bake for 30-35 minutes at 375 degrees.

Day 85

Everyone knows what the Statue of Liberty looks like from upfront. How many of you have seen it from behind?

Or upskirt?Or knew that back in the 80s, the torch was replaced? In other news, I found myself here tonight:Yep, the Lion King Musical. It was a good show and the costumes were amazing......but I can't help but wonder if the show was a bit longer than it should've been. There were too many moments in which I felt there were scenes that didn't fit into the bigger picture, songs that lasted longer than they should've, and acting that was a bit melodramatic (then again, this is Broadway). My theory, though, is that since The Lion King is something we grew up with, our nostalgia-colored glasses prevent us from accepting any sort of mutilation to the original content we've grown to know and love. As such, to see this story last an hour longer than it should can lead to disappointment for some of us.

At the very least, I got to try "Rafiki's Jungle Juice":

Traveling Bear Addendum:Mocha joined us on our trip to the Statue of Liberty today! My sister makes a quick cameo.

Given this last picture though, I think I've taken Mocha around to all the important sights and sounds of NYC, and as such have decided that it may be time for Mocha to go back home soon. I'll post more details on this soon enough.

9/16/11

Day 84

The family wanted pizza tonight. So we went. And we saw this. Must mean the place is good.

9/15/11

Day 83

My family's visiting the East Coast this week, and after having spent the past 4 days touring Philly, DC, Boston, and Niagara Falls, they finally made their way out to see me here in NYC. Woohoo, free meals for the next few days! /Their hotel just happened to be on the border of Chinatown and Little Italy. As it turns out, the Feast of San Gennaro was occurring this weekend, and was just down the street.

Some of you may recognize that this is the very feast that is occurring during the scene in Godfather Part 2 where Vito Corleone murders Don Fanucci:Cool.

9/14/11

Day 82

SMX Day 2. This time attended a talk on Duplication, Aggregation, Syndication, Affiliates, Scraping, and Information Architecture (don't ask).

9/13/11

Day 81

Working in the wonderful world of internet and search marketing sometimes grants me access to some of the most lucrative industry conferences in the country...

...kinda. I only signed up for the free pass and you probably wouldn't care/know/give a damn about what's going on inside if you weren't involved in this stuff.

9/12/11

Day 80

Oh, eww, NYC.

mm65

Yuya Uchida and the Flowers - Summertime

While this Japanese psycadelic group's album "Challenge!" relies mostly on covers that don't really do much to change the structure or tone of the originals, the main appeal is that despite that, they still sound like a whole different song. Case in point with this cover of Cream's "I'm So Glad"

9/11/11

Day 79

How fitting I find this on the ground during the anniversary...

9/10/11

Day 78

Seems everyone wanted to visit this weekend (I had 4 friends and my family all arrive within a matter of 12 hours in NYC), and as such go to play tour guide for the day. Kinda strange to be the one actually bringing people around the city myself. I never imagined I'd be the resident expert on New York anytime soon, but here we are. In either case it was still pleasant to be able to show my California brethren what they're missing out on:In other news, since retrieving my family from Jersey required a rental car, I thus invested in a vehicle for the weekend.

As it turns out, someone up there must like me since Avis ran out of the compact cars I reserved at the last minute. How did they make it up to me? With this:
Well, if they're gonna twist my arm, I guess I had no option but to take one for the team. Oh woe is me.

9/9/11

Day 77

My company had an awesome Friday policy of letting us off early during the summertime. The office would close at 2pm, and we'd be free.

That all ended after Labor Day, and Mocha sure was feeling it today too.

9/8/11

Day 76

My friend introduced me to the "Jeff Goldblum is watching you poop" meme today. Guess what happens next:And alternatively...

9/7/11

Day 75

I don't necessarily listen to Moby all that often, but this was free and I wanted to see for myself if Moby actually looks like Dean Pelton.
Yes, yes he does.

9/6/11

Day 74

Nothing particularly interesting happened today, so I just brought Mocha out to the balcony. Not pictured: Mocha jumping off the balcony, doing a somersault and a backflip before landing perfectly on the ground (that may or may not have been exaggerated).

9/5/11

Day 73

For the record, screenshots can count as a picture-of-the-day (especially since not much else happened today). But here you see in the top left corner my sister and dad in South San Francisco, on the right corner you see my nephew in Hong Kong, and on the bottom is me in New York.

Pretty cool, if you ask me.

mm64

I feel like I had to include this track for this Monday, since over the weekend I heard some fairly ignorant statements during a listen of this particular album, "A Momentary Lapse of Reason":

"So the point of this type of music is not to sing along with it, it's to listen to them play their instruments? Crazy."

"How is it considered rock if there's no guitar?"

"What's an instrumental?"

"I can't believe music like this used to be popular...how did it get popular? On the radio?"

(When referring to the artwork on Jimi Hendrix's 'Electric Ladyland') "Why is he hanging out with white people? He doesn't seem like the kind of guy to hang around with white people"

Yes, this was all verbatim. And yes, she is around my age. It's shit like this, my generation! Shit like this!

9/4/11

Day 72

As you can see, this week I took care of business in making sure I got to see where these legendary New York baseball teams call home. I of course could not pass up on watching a game at the cathedral of baseball's (unfortunate and unfair, but true) premiere clubs.

When you first enter, this place just screams history (despite having been built in 2009). Everywhere you look there's some throwback to the Yankees' storied past, and you can turn around without being reminded that these guys won the World Series 27 times.

While it's no question that the means in which this franchise has won its accolades can be deemed unfair (and don't get me wrong, I hate the Yankees as much as any other non-New Yorker would), you have to admit that they do good job of selling their product. Which brings me to my next point. There's nothing but baseball here. The stadium doesn't have any extra frills or gimmicks to enhance the "fan experience." Yes, it's a shiny, practically brand new ballpark, but that's all they offer. Baseball. No giant coke bottle (sorry San Francisco), no lollipop shaped pinwheel lights that go off after every homerun (sorry, Chicago White Sox), no stupid fake waterfall (sor...actually, no, I'm not sorry, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim). This stadium features baseball and baseball only, and that probably is a true testament to their place in the sport's history.

Traveling Bear Addendum:

This bear isn't even a month old, and already it's been to two baseball games. Lucky her.
